crossing within very short distances of one another present great difficulties in providing safe & proper insulation.
The "comparatively small increased cost" of the double trolley system - for additional trolley & feeder wires - over that for the single trolley system - would be at least $100,000. It would mean the throwing away of the conducting capacity of the rails, which is equivalent to that of a copper bar .4 square inches in cross-section. The increased liability of the telephone system being damaged by typhoon because of the doubling of the number of wires will apply in equal measure to the tramway lines.
In the early days of the electric railway the exclusive right of the telephone companies to the earth as a return circuit was fought out in the courts and it was well established that the telephone companies did not have the exclusive right claimed by them, but that the tramway companies had equal right and they simply had to meet the new conditions introduced by the electric tramways.
Yours faithfully,
